Located near Queen Anne, MD, the Mason farm has been in the family since 1900. The farm consists of two businesses, Mason’s Heritage and Mason Farms Produce. Mason’s Heritage is the family’s certified organic grain operation. It’s run by Bill and Susanne Mason, the 4th generation to live and work on the farm. Bill began working with his father full-time after graduating from the University of Maryland in 1970 and is still the sole operator to this day. The farm itself consists of 850 acres (500 tillable), most of which is dedicated to the production of corn, soybeans, and barley. The transition to organic began in 2006, with the last acres becoming fully certified in 2018. In addition to the home farm, Bill and Susanne lease five other local farms as well, all of which they till organically.
Mason Farms Produce is managed by their daughter Kate Mason Kraszewski and her husband Steve Kraszewski. Kate received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Cornell University in 2005 and 2007, respectively. She then went on to work for the Maryland Department of Agriculture as a Marketing Specialist for four years. After that she returned to the family farm to run the produce business. Steve is originally from Corning, NY, where he grew up on his family’s beef cattle farm. He also received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Cornell, which is how he met Kate. After finishing his Master’s in 2008 he moved to Maryland and held jobs with both USDA-NRCS and Maryland Cooperative Extension. During this time, he worked both on the grain farm and at the produce market. In 2014, Steve began working for Bill full-time while also helping with all aspects of the produce business. Kate and Steve have two children, William and Rosa, who love to assist their parents around the farm.
